Noynoy on Hacienda Luisita: The Second Lie of Redistribution
Noynoy Aquino is not the first Aquino who lied about redistribution. Lies are common in their family. Cory Aquino, who is determined to wipe out any mark of the Marcoses, dismissed a case launched by Marcos against her family. This is a case which seeks to implement a clause contained in a government loan agreement in the 50s in favor of the Cojuangco family. We all know that the loan was granted so the Cojuangco family can buy the land from Tabacalera Inc. – see noynoy hacienda luisita
Why did Aquino order the dismissal of the case? Is she scared that the international media, who are so proud of her, would see the rotten side of her family? On the contrary, the dismissal of the case backfired. International political analysts began looking at her dark side – a heartless landowner who seeks to perpetually enslave her tenants. The once darling of the press and symbol of democracy is now compared to other female tyrants like Empress Dowager of China, Eva Peron, and the vicious Catherine the Great of Russia. The international media again saw another shocking event – the Mendiola Massacre – and a more shocking event – Cory Aquino’s insensitivities on addressing the deaths.
What lead to Mendiola anyway? When Aquino ordered the dismissal of the case, she promised to redistribute the Hacienda. It was merely a reiteration of her campaign promise (1986 election Marcos v. Aquino). Twice she promised it – see good source.
When a group of farmers marched to Mendiola to ask for explanation why the redistribution did not materialize, the Manila Police lead by Alfredo Lim opened fired. 13 people died in the incident. Corazon Aquino never condemned the mishaps of the police, and she even supported Lim in his bid for the presidency in 1998 – see noynoy hacienda luisita.
